PROKOFIEV: Symphony No. 1 in D Major, Op. 25: Classical
HAYDN: Sinfonia concertante in B-flat Major, Op. 84, Hob.I:105
BARTÓK: Concerto for Orchestra

San Diego Symphony musicians are front and center for this concert exploring the meaning of "The Classical Style" as interpreted by three very different composers. Franz Joseph Haydn was simply applying his hand to the latest classical "concertante" craze (circa 1792) by featuring multiple instruments interacting with the orchestra. The result is timeless, joyful music as well as an excellent feature of four of our principal musicians. Over 100 years later, young Russian iconoclast composer Serge Prokofiev surprised everyone by surrendering his most modern ideas to the sort of fresh, delightful and short Classical Symphony Haydn would certainly have recognized and approved of.

And if ever a piece of music can be said to have given its composer a new lease on life, Béla Bartók's Concerto for Orchestra is it. This "deathbed" commission from the great Boston Symphony Orchestra conductor Serge Koussevitzky in 1942 pulled Bartók out of the hospital and into one last creative burst. The Concerto for Orchestra is overflowing with wit, life and love for orchestral musicians and orchestral form, each section and player being allowed to shine in ingenious and, yes, "classical" ways!

The concert is led by gifted 27 year old Israeli conductor Lahav Shani, first prize winner at the 2013 Gustav Mahler International Conducting Competition.
