RUSSIA AND PARIS
A Jacobs Masterworks Concert
Fabien Gabel, conductor
Jeff Thayer, violin
STRAVINSKY: Violin Concerto in D Major
SHOSTAKOVICH: Symphony No. 9 in E-flat Major, Op. 70
RAVEL: Suite No. 2 from Daphnis et Chloé
Two great artistic cultures intersect in unexpected ways on this classical program featuring French and Russian composers. Igor Stravinsky fully entered his neo-classical phase with his Violin Concerto in 1931; heavily influenced by Bach, it was the only concerto of any kind Stravinsky ever wrote, and he wrote it in France. (Concertmaster Jeff Thayer will be our soloist.)
For Maurice Ravel, it was the Russians who came to him, in the form of the Ballets Russes and their impresario Serge Diaghilev; they wanted a new ballet based on an old Greek story, and Ravel created Daphnis et Chloé for them. The popular Suite No. 2 of this extravagent, ravishing music is featured on this program.
Quebec Symphony Orchestra music director Fabien Gabel, our guest conductor, also leads the Orchestra in performances of Claude Debussy's very first orchestral tone poem, Printemps (a perfect choice for April!) as well Dmitri Shostakovich's merry, mischievous and above all entertaining Symphony No. 9.
Join us for Nuvi Mehta's highly informative "What's The Score?" pre-concert talk, beginning 45 minutes before downbeat. This presentation is free with your ticket, and takes place inside the concert hall.
