RACHMANINOFF: The Isle of the Dead

A Beyond The Score® multi-media concert presentation!

Sergei Rachmaninoff’s most famous tone poem, based on a popular painting by symbolist Swiss artist Arnold Böcklin, is the subject of this season’s first multi-media Beyond the Score® exploration. The eerie 5/8 time signature, Russian soulfulness and the Western “Dies irae” chant are blended for a spellbinding visit to “the undiscovered country” between life and death. Using narrator and actor, the story of how Rachmaninoff came to write this striking work will surprise you.

Please Note: there will be no "What's The Score?" pre-concert talk before this Beyond the Score® performance.

What is Beyond the Score®? Beyond the Score® is a special type of concert using actors and video to dramatize the “behind the scenes” story of one piece of music. In this concert, we look at Rachmaninoff’s famous work Isle of the Dead, which was inspired by a luminous painting that was very popular at the time in Europe. You'll learn all about this at the concert, then the symphony will perform Isle of the Dead, which clocks in at just 20 minutes. Tickets start at just $25. Give it a try!

Beyond the Score® is a production of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra
