A Jacobs Masterworks Concert

Sameer Patel, conductor
Anne Akiko Meyers, violin

LISZT: Les Préludes
Adam SCHOENBERG: Orchard in Fog for Violin and Orchestra (World Premiere)
[Written and commissioned in honor of Anne Akiko Meyers]
SIBELIUS: Symphony No. 5 in E-flat Major, Op. 82

San Diego Symphony Associate Conductor Sameer Patel makes his Jacobs Masterworks debut. The concert opens with Franz Liszt’s most popular tone poem, in which he paints feelings rather than pictures in a series of delightfully contrasting episodes built from a few simple themes. Violinist Anne Akiko Meyers then offers the world premiere of Orchard in Fog, a melodic and lovely violin concerto written just for her by acclaimed young American composer Adam Schoenberg. Schoenberg’s concerto was inspired both by an Adam Laipson photograph and his own love story with his wife. (CLICK HERE to see the Adam Laipson photograph that inspired Adam Schoenberg to write this concerto.) The program concludes with Jean Sibelius’ hopeful, life-affirming Symphony No. 5, composed as Europe was recovering from the First World War.
