STRAVINSKY: Le Sacre du printemps (The Rite of Spring) [arr. Cl. Colnot]

In 1913 Igor Stravinsky's Le Sacre du printemps (The Rite of Spring) exploded on the scene with a torrent of rhythm, color, choreography and energy, capturing, more than any other piece of music, the energy and anima of the brand-new 20th century. In a new arrangement by Cliff Colnot for 12 musicians, we'll explore this riotous work in a special multi-media presentation. This special performance takes place at The Music Box in Little Italy, downtown San Diego.

For this performance, composer Cliff Colnot has arranged Stravinsky’s original orchestral work for 12 instruments and conductor. Inspired by a 100-year old tradition known as The Society for Private Musical Performances, this arrangement gives us the opportunity to hear the intention of Stravinsky’s work with brilliant clarity and focus.

Additional visual and aural elements will illuminate this performance. Incorporating recordings of original Lithuanian folk melodies, recordings of Russian folk instruments, and spoken dialogue based on known correspondence of Stravinsky and Roerich will provide insight and illumination to this pivotal work. Taking advantage of the unique technical capacities of The Music Box, Roerich’s vivid images will surround the performance, corresponding to the musical composition as it unfolds.

NOTE: Doors at The Music Box open at 9pm.
