With original music by Rob Thorne (Ngāti Tumutumu), Celeste Oram and Alex Taylor
Libretto by Dr. Vincent Olsen-Reeder (Ngā Pōtiki a Tamapahore, Ngāti Pūkenga, Ngāi Te Rangi, Te Arawa) and Jeanette Mohr
Puppetry and design in collaboration with San Diego Guild of Puppeteers.
He Pūtōrino Mākutu (Eine Zauberflöte/A Magic Flute) is a chamber opera that combines two musical traditions from antipodes of the globe: Viennese classicism and taonga pūoro - the instrumental musical heritage of the Maori peoples of Aotearoa New Zealand. Musical borrowings from Mozart, Schubert and Beethoven are reimagined and responded to with original music and a bilingual libretto in Te Reo Māori and German. A trans-Pacific cast of vocalists from Aotearoa and the United States joins forces with San Diego musicians onstage with shadow puppets by the San Diego Guild of Puppetry.
A pūriri tree from Aotearoa has magically taken root in the Vienna Woods. Out of its spirit, ancient ancestors sing; and into its shade wanders one of the few men in Vienna to have sailed the South Seas. Like its Mozart-Schikaneder namesake, He Pūtōrino Mākutu is a fantastical allegory of the precarious quest for universal brotherhood, the threat of hospitality, the power of a magic flute and the politics of whose it is to give and to receive.
